Gliadin is part of the gluten protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. Antibodies against gliadin, also known as anti-gliadin antibodies, arise in certain sensitive individuals exposed to gluten for a specific period. Detection of gliadin antibodies is one of the tests used to diagnose celiac disease and other gluten sensitivities. Antigliadin antibodies can rule out celiac disease in patients with anemia or abdominal pain or in the context of investigating various allergies. Typically, both IgA and IgG anti-gliadin antibodies are measured.
The presence of other diseases of the gastrointestinal system, such as Crohn's disease, can sometimes give a false-positive result.
