Weight Gain and Obesity

Weight gain may be due to increased muscle mass, fat deposition, or fluid retention such as water. If the percentage of body fat is above what is considered healthy for age and gender, we are led to the diagnosis of obesity. While weight gain due to increased muscle mass is associated with many health benefits, weight gain due to fat gain contributes to diseases such as osteoarthritis, diabetes mellitus, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases.
