Leaky gut testing is a noninvasive test to assess the integrity and function of the intestinal mucosa. It can diagnose leaky gut syndrome, a pathologically elevated intestinal permeability often associated with gastrointestinal tract inflammation.

Leaky gut testing examines the ability of two small molecules, lactulose and mannitol, to pass through the intestinal epithelium. This test requires taking a solution of lactulose and mannitol and then collecting urine for six hours.

To whom Leaky Gut Test is addressed

The gastrointestinal tract epithelium has two main functions: (a) to absorb the essential nutrients for the growth and function of the body and (b) to act as a selective barrier that keeps harmful substances away. When the integrity and functionality of this complex system are disturbed, it results in disturbances in intestinal permeability, leading to less absorption of nutrients (and toxins) or, conversely, excessive absorption of nutrients (and toxic) substances.

Changes in intestinal permeability have been associated with pathological conditions, such as:

  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Food intolerance and food allergies
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Malabsorption of nutrients and nutritional deficiencies
  • Autoimmunities
