Screening for platelet antibodies (anti-platelet antibodies) is used to detect the presence of autoantibodies and isoantibodies (alloantibodies) against specific glycoproteins on the platelet surface.

The test includes antibodies against antigens: HLA class I, GP IV (platelet glycoprotein), and polymorphic epitopes against platelet glycoproteins IIb / IIIa, Ib / IX, Ia / IIa

Antiplatelet autoantibodies are almost always IgG immunoglobulins of autoimmune origin and are present in all cases of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Antiplatelet isoantibodies are created in patients when they are sensitized to platelet antigens during blood transfusions. This results in the destruction of both donor and recipient platelets and reduces the platelet life of the transfusion recipient.

This test does not detect antibodies related to heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), the most common immunological thrombocytopenia due to medication taking.

What Do Pathological Values Mean?

  • Increase: Thrombocytopenia caused by antiplatelet autoantibodies that result in idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, post-transfusion purpura, platelet transfusion resistance, isoimmune purpura, drug-induced purpura (quinidine, quinine, furosemide, sulfonamides), induced purpura by antiplatelet isoantibodies after multiple transfusions.

Important Note

Laboratory test results are the most important parameter for the diagnosis and monitoring of all pathological conditions. 70%-80% of diagnostic decisions are based on laboratory tests. The correct interpretation of laboratory results allows a doctor to distinguish "healthy" from "diseased".

Laboratory test results should not be interpreted from the numerical result of a single analysis. Test results should be interpreted in relation to each individual case and family history, clinical findings, and the results of other laboratory tests and information. Your personal physician should explain the importance of your test results.

At Diagnostiki Athinon we answer any questions you may have about the test you perform in our laboratory and we contact your doctor to get the best possible medical care.
