This test checks the urine for the presence of phencyclidine.
Phencyclidine (PCP), or Angel Dust, Hog, is a highly addictive, illegal, hallucinogenic drug that was designed as an anesthetic and sedative for veterinary use. It causes euphoria by accelerating the body's metabolism. Phencyclidine is available in powder or capsule form and can be taken orally, injected, inhaled, and smoked. The kidneys excrete it, and it is detectable in urine.
Symptoms of Phencyclidine use are:
- Stage I. Psychiatric signs: dizziness or euphoria with possible ataxia, muscle spasms, fever, tachycardia, flushing, sweating, salivation, nausea and vomiting
- Stage II. Lethargy, convulsions, especially after stimulation, hallucinations, progressive increase in heart rate, fever, and blood pressure. CNS stimulation or depression may occur
- Stage III. An increase in heart rate and metabolism leads progressively to cardiac and respiratory failure
Phencyclidine is detected in urine 2-5 hours after use, while the detection period ranges from a few days to 2-4 weeks, depending on the frequency of use (sporadic, frequent, or chronic use).
