More information

Parainfluenza viruses (Parainfluenza virus) are a group of single-stranded RNA viruses, consisting of four separate serotypes belonging to the Paramyxoviridae family. Of the four serotypes, only three have clinical significance. It is the second most common cause of influenza-associated respiratory tract infections in young children. Viruses are spread by droplets. Young children up to the age of 3 in temperate climates are mainly affected. There is usually a seasonal accumulation of infections during the winter months. 90% of children up to the age of 10 have been infected with Parainfluenza Viruses. Parainfluenza viruses initially attack the pharyngeal mucosa, but soon the infection can spread to the entire tracheobronchial tree. Excessive mucosal secretion can lead to airway obstruction, especially in young children. Adult infections are rare and tend to be milder when they occur.

Parainfluenza viruses type 1 and 3 cause influenza in young children accompanied by fever, cough, rhinitis, bronchitis and pseudo-laryngitis. Pneumonia can also occur. Bacterial infections are common as are usually harmless infections.

Parainfluenza type 2 infections lead to similar clinical symptoms as with types 1 and 3, but the course of infection is milder.

Important Note

Laboratory test results are the most important parameter for the diagnosis and monitoring of all pathological conditions. 70%-80% of diagnostic decisions are based on laboratory tests. Correct interpretation of laboratory results allows a doctor to distinguish "healthy" from "diseased".

Laboratory test results should not be interpreted from the numerical result of a single analysis. Test results should be interpreted in relation to each individual case and family history, clinical findings and the results of other laboratory tests and information. Your personal physician should explain the importance of your test results.

At Diagnostiki Athinon we answer any questions you may have about the test you perform in our laboratory and we contact your doctor to get the best possible medical care.
