Nasal secretion testing for eosinophils is used to control allergic rhinitis.
More information
The occurrence of eosinophils in the nasal smear has been reported in allergic states including allergies to medications. The nasal smear for eosinophils (eosinophils) is a reliable test, with relatively high specificity especially in children with seasonal allergic rhinitis, since the nasal secretions of patients with allergic rhinitis usually contain increased numbers of eosinophils. In allergy, the pathological picture is characterized by eosinophilic infiltration and edema. When eosinophils are found in secretions, they indicate the presence of an allergic process.
In purely inflammatory or infectious processes that affect the same structures, the cytological response is expressed by neutrophil cells. In allergic situations, the degree of eosinophilia of the secretions is proportional to the severity of the symptoms and reactions. In milder cases of nasal allergy, eosinophils are present in comparatively small numbers, whereas in hay fever, large numbers of cells are present. Acute and chronic infections are characterized by neutrophilic granule cell infiltration and therefore only this type of cell is secreted.
Allergic rhinitis is an IgE mediated hypersensitivity reaction to the nasal mucosa characterized by sneezing, itching, aqueous nasal secretions and a feeling of nasal obstruction.
Important Note
Laboratory test results are the most important parameter for the diagnosis and monitoring of all pathological conditions. 70%-80% of diagnostic decisions are based on laboratory tests. Correct interpretation of laboratory results allows a doctor to distinguish "healthy" from "diseased".
Laboratory test results should not be interpreted from the numerical result of a single analysis. Test results should be interpreted in relation to each individual case and family history, clinical findings and the results of other laboratory tests and information. Your personal physician should explain the importance of your test results.
At Diagnostiki Athinon we answer any questions you may have about the test you perform in our laboratory and we contact your doctor to get the best possible medical care.
