This test checks the urine for the presence of cocaine.
Cocaine is a natural anesthetic with vasoconstrictive properties and is also a potent stimulant of the central nervous system. As a local anesthetic, cocaine is used in 1-4% solutions in ophthalmological procedures and in 10-20% solutions in otorhinolaryngologic procedures. The medical use of cocaine is now rare due to its addiction.
Cocaine in the body is rapidly converted to metabolites which are excreted in the urine. Only a small fraction of cocaine is excreted in the urine and the detection time after use is shorter compared to cocaine metabolites. The presence of the metabolite (benzoylecgonine) is evidence of cocaine use and can be detected in the urine for a period of 2-5 days after use.
Toxicity: The desired effect of cocaine includes euphoria, anorexia, and sexual arousal. Prolonged and intense use can lead to paranoia, hallucinations, and violent behavior. Stimulation of the central nervous system is followed by depression. This cycle of excitement and depression is the main reason for chronic abuse.
Cocaine and its metabolites are detected in the urine for a period of 2-5 days after use. The following substances are detected: benzoylecgonine, ecgonine, cocaethylene, cocaine.
