High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is a type of cholesterol carried by alpha-lipoprotein. It is believed to help protect against the risk of developing coronary heart disease, and its levels are inversely related to the risk of developing it.
Patients with low HDL values should work to reduce risk factors such as smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity.
Possible Interpretations of Pathological Values
- Increase: Alcoholism, chronic hepatitis, biliary cirrhosis (primary), congenital hyperalphalipoproteinemia. Medications: Chlorinated hydrocarbons, cimetidine, cyclophenyl, estrogens (alone or with progesterone), ethyl alcohol (ethanol), lovastatin, niacin, nicotinic acid, phenytoin, terbutaline. Herbs and natural remedies: Flaxseed, soybeans, dark chocolate, walnuts
- Decrease: Arteriosclerosis, bacterial infections, cholestasis, coronary artery disease, hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, hyperlipoproteinemia, liver disease, metabolic syndrome, obesity (often), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), kidney disease, Tangier disease, type IV hyperlipoproteinemia, viral infections. Medications: Androgens, beta-adrenergic blockers, intravenous immunoglobulin. A diet rich in carbohydrates
