Ceruloplasmin serum measurement is mainly used to diagnose Wilson's disease.

More information

Ceruloplasmin belongs to the α2-globulins and is a copper-carrying protein (Cu). It also regulates the uptake of iron by transferrin. The ceruloplasmin test gives immediate information on the amount of copper in the blood serum. Ceruloplasmin measurement is used in the diagnosis of Wilson's Disease, a hereditary syndrome that reduces the levels of liver-synthesized ceruloplasmin. Without ceruloplasmin for its transport, copper accumulates in the tissues of the brain, eyes, kidneys and liver. One of the features of this disease is the presence of copper deposits around the iris of the eye, known as Kayser-Fleischer rings.

The concentration of ceruloplasmin, as an acute-phase protein, increases during stress, infections, neoplasms, and pregnancy.

Possible Interpretations of Pathological Values

  • Increase: Cancer, cirrhosis, infection, rheumatoid arthritis, pregnancy, primary sclerosing cholangitis, stress, thyroid toxicity. Medications: Estrogens, methadone, oral contraceptives, phenytoin
  • Decrease: Hypochalcaemia due to parenteral nutrition, Kwashiorkor, malabsorption, Menkes syndrome, nephrotic syndrome, normal infants (under 6 months), celiac disease, Wilson's disease

Important Note

Laboratory test results are the most important parameter for the diagnosis and monitoring of all pathological conditions. 70%-80% of diagnostic decisions are based on laboratory tests. Correct interpretation of laboratory results allows a doctor to distinguish "healthy" from "diseased".

Laboratory test results should not be interpreted from the numerical result of a single analysis. Test results should be interpreted in relation to each individual case and family history, clinical findings and the results of other laboratory tests and information. Your personal physician should explain the importance of your test results.

At Diagnostiki Athinon we answer any questions you may have about the test you perform in our laboratory and we contact your doctor to get the best possible medical care.
