This test checks the urine for the presence of amphetamines.
Amphetamines are sympathomimetic amines that stimulate the central nervous system and, in part, suppress appetite. Phentermine, amphetamine, and methamphetamine are drugs used for weight loss. All other amphetamines are substances that are prohibited from being sold and used. In addition to their medical use as anorexic drugs, they are also used in the treatment of narcolepsy, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and cerebral dysfunction.
Symptoms associated with high doses of amphetamine or methamphetamine use include increased blood pressure, mydriasis, hyperthermia, convulsions, and acute psychotic disorder.
Amphetamines are detected in the urine from 1 to 5 days after the last dose.
The following substances are detected: d-amphetamine, l-amphetamine, d, l-amphetamine, phentermine, and 3,4 methylenedioxy amphetamine (MDA).
