Troponin I (cTnI)

Includes 1 test

Blood troponin I assay is used to diagnose or exclude acute myocardial infarction.

More information

Troponin is a protein complex that regulates the contraction of striated muscle tissue. It consists of 3 subunits (C, T and I) that are periodically located along the muscle fibrils. Troponin I is present in 3 isoforms: cardiac muscle, slow contraction skeletal muscle, and rapid contraction skeletal muscle. The cardiac isoform of troponin I (cTnI) is different from the other two isoforms, which allows the development of specific methods for its detection. This specialization improves the accuracy of diagnosis in patients with acute or chronic skeletal muscle injury and possible concomitant myocardial injury.

Troponin I is released into the bloodstream within hours of the onset of symptoms of myocardial infarction or ischemic injury. Troponin I can be detected from 3 to 6 hours after the onset of chest pain, with peak concentrations occurring at 12 to 16 hours and remaining elevated for 5 to 9 days.

Possible Interpretations of Pathological Values
  • Troponin I increase: Acute myocardial infarction, angina, coronary syndrome, myocarditis.

Important Note

Laboratory test results are the most important parameter for the diagnosis and monitoring of all pathological conditions. 70%-80% of diagnostic decisions are based on laboratory tests. Correct interpretation of laboratory results allows a doctor to distinguish "healthy" from "diseased".

Laboratory test results should not be interpreted from the numerical result of a single analysis. Test results should be interpreted in relation to each individual case and family history, clinical findings and the results of other laboratory tests and information. Your personal physician should explain the importance of your test results.

At Diagnostiki Athinon we answer any questions you may have about the test you perform in our laboratory and we contact your doctor to get the best possible medical care.
