Lipoprotein (a), Serum

Includes 1 test

Serum lipoprotein-α is used to assess the risk of developing cardiovascular disease in patients with moderate or high risk of developing cardiovascular disease based on conventional risk assessment indices.

More information

Lipoprotein-α or Lp (a) is a heterogeneous group of lipoproteins consisting of an ApoA molecule joined to an ApoB molecule. Elevated levels of Lp (a) are an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis and are particularly harmful to the endothelium. Serum Lp (a) concentration appears to be highly correlated with genetic factors whereas diet and drugs (statins) have no significant effect on lipoprotein α levels. Taking niacin, however, may lower Lp levels (a).

Measurement of serum Lp (a) may contribute to a more in-depth assessment of the risk of developing atherosclerotic disease in patients and other risk factors. Such patients are for example: patients with early atherosclerosis, patients with a strong family history of premature coronary artery disease, patients with elevated LDL cholesterol and two or more risk factors, patients who have had coronary angioplasty and who may have increased risk of restenosis, and patients who have undergone aortic bypass surgery and in whom increased lipoprotein-α may be associated with graft stenosis.

Important Note

Laboratory test results are the most important parameter for the diagnosis and monitoring of all pathological conditions. 70%-80% of diagnostic decisions are based on laboratory tests. Correct interpretation of laboratory results allows a doctor to distinguish "healthy" from "diseased".

Laboratory test results should not be interpreted from the numerical result of a single analysis. Test results should be interpreted in relation to each individual case and family history, clinical findings and the results of other laboratory tests and information. Your personal physician should explain the importance of your test results.

At Diagnostiki Athinon we answer any questions you may have about the test you perform in our laboratory and we contact your doctor to get the best possible medical care.
